For the sixth time, the Algarve in southern Portugal has won the award for ‘Europe’s Leading Beach Destination’ at the 2019 World Travel Awards.  It is a world first as no other destination has won it so many times.  The award was announced at a Gala Ceremony on 8th June 2019 in Madeira, Portugal.

Accepting the award João Fernandes, President of Algarve Tourism Bureau said: “We are delighted to win the award for the sixth time, and to make history in this way. The Algarve is blessed with a wide variety of beaches from small secluded bays to sweeping expanses of white sand. The calmer beaches are perfect for younger children who love to pick clams in the wet sand, or play in the small waves, whilst older children adore all the watersports on offer such as surfing and bodyboards. And parents appreciate the great restaurants on the beaches, medical help points and serviced sunbeds.”

The Algarve in Portugal is home to over 100 beaches, 88 of which are blue flag beaches and the coastline stretches across 200km. The calm waters of the wide east coast beaches of Barril, Tavira, Manta Rota and Altura are perfect for families and are manned by lifeguards.

On the central coastline beaches such as Falesia stretch for almost 6 km flanked by a line of high cliffs in striking tones ranging from ochre to golden. And in contrast there are perfectly formed bays and smaller beaches such as Marinha and Carvoeiro that are surrounded by warmly-coloured limestone cliffs, crystal-clear water, and just off shore a remarkable variety of curious rock formations, such as arches and stacks.

Beaches found along the Algarve’s west coast such as Amado, Bordeira and Monte Clerigo are some of the most scenic and uncrowded in the country. As the beaches are swept by the Atlantic winds they offer fantastic surfing opportunities.

João Fernandes continues: “Complementing the beaches we have a wide choice of hotels (many of which have Green Key accreditation), excellent gastronomy, incredible golf courses and authentic experiences, that take the holiday experience beyond the beach. The Algarve is quickly gaining recognition as a luxury, sustainable and family-friendly destination.”
