Northern Ireland’s own Olivia Mehaffey conquered testing conditions in Southerndown to win The Welsh Ladies Open Stroke Play and make it three in a row!
Olivia came into the Welsh event on the back of victories in Ireland and Scotland, edging out England’s Olivia Winning by a single shot.
The top Welsh performer was Tenby’s Becky Harries who finished in sixth place, a closing 72 rocketing her up the leaderboard at Southerndown.
“The golf course is awesome, such a great layout, it is one of my favourites now,” said a delighted Mehaffey.
“It was really windy so it was a bit different, but it was a good weekend and everything was exciting.
“In the past two weeks I have come from behind to win, so it was harder being the front runner. I did a lot of hard work in the winter and it certainly seems to be paying off at the moment, this has been a great start to the season.
“I have a bit of a break before the Irish Amateur and the British Amateur so there is a chance to get some rest and keep working on the same things that have been working.”
Two opening rounds of 73 set up Mehaffey for the win, with the conditions at the Southerndown course testing all the players fully.
“Congratulations to Olivia for a very impressive victory to keep and incredible run of wins going,” said Gavin Reen, Golf Union of Wales Championship Manager
“Southerndown was in top condition for one of our highest profile events and I would like to pay a special thanks to Southerndown Director of Golf John Peters and Course Manager Andrew Mannion for all their hard work.
“The conditions were difficult and the strong winds played a part over the links course, but everyone worked hard to make sure the event finished.
